In my youth, I believed February was a short month because the Higher Power knew we were impatient for warmer days so the coldest darkest time was made shorter. To me, the month of February was an ‘in between ‘month, in between the over and done joy of the holiday season – Yule, and the planning of fresh new season of growth that lies ahead- Vernal equinox. History tells us Augustus Caesar stole a day from February to add to the month named after him — August. On the other hand, the real reason February is shorter is that the first calendar was only 10 months long. 45BC. Julius Caesar determined that adding an extra day each four years, was crucial in balancing and coordinating the calendar with Earth's orbit around the sun and the actual changing of the seasons.
This year 2024 is a Leap year with 366 days instead of the usual 365, that extra day is Feb.29, so, Happy Birthday, Leaplings, time to revel in your long awaited celebration; after all it’s been four years. Well, not really, you do have your solar return day each year like the rest of us, but your actual day of birth is a pretty big deal and interesting to us ordinary people. Leaplings are believed to hold special talents, as well as being intuitive and lucky.

Planetary Miscellany - Irish Oatmeal Scones
If you want a change from the usual Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick’s Day, these Irish Oatmeal Scones are a delicious treat with a simple and subtle flavor. Serve either warm from the oven, or cooled to room temperature and spread with Jam., clotted cream or butter
Ingredients
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Combine currants and water in Pyrex measuring cup. Microwave to boiling point, cover, and let stand. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and baking soda in large mixing bowl or Cuisinart bowl. Cut in butter with pastry knife, or pulse in food processor until it resembles coarse meal. Drain currants, and then add currants and oats to mixture. Stir in buttermilk until dough is barely moistened. Turn dough onto floured board and knead 6 to 8 times. Roll or pat into a circle, place on ungreased baking sheet, and score into 8 wedges. Brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse-grained sugar (if using). Bake for about 15 minutes.

But these aren’t the only ways to celebrate, in case you didn’t know it’s also Alice in Wonderland Day and we have Lewis Carroll to thank for that.
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known to the world as Lewis Carroll, was born in Cheshire England. Educated at Oxford University, and although he excelled in mathematics, Dodgson had a most creative edge. This creativity led him to become an author, illustrator, and poet. Because Dodgson loved how children viewed the world, he often made-up stories to entertain them. One child in particular he enjoyed telling stories to his friend Henry Liddell’s daughter, Alice. On July 4th, 1862, Dodgson told Alice and her two sisters a story of a girl named Alice. The girl had fallen down a rabbit hole. During her time in the rabbit hole, Alice met all kinds of peculiar creatures. Dodgson eventually wrote the story on paper and published it in 1865. The story contains a variety of characters such as The Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, King of Hearts, Cheshire cat, and White Rabbit. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of the best-selling children’s books of all time. It has never been out of print.
Over the years, the book has been changed into numerous Alice movies and productions. The first film adaptation came out as a silent film in 1903. The first sound version premiered in 1931. The Disney Cartoon Classic of Alice in Wonderland came out in 1951. A stage version in 1982 called “Alice at the Palace” starred Meryl Streep. Alice in Wonderland has also been adapted as a ballet production, an anime version, an opera, a made-for-television show called, Alice through the Looking Glass, and a sci-fi miniseries called Alice.
Many Brits and other Alice fans around the world will celebrate Alice in Wonderland day by hosting tea parties, dressing up as Alice or other characters from the book, and celebrating all things Alice... Another great way to participate is to read the book for you. You can also watch one of the many Alice in Wonderland movies. Alice in Wonderland Day was born in 2015 to mark the 150th anniversary of the “Alice in Wonderland Book”. British fans of the book began holding special events that marked the date the story was first told. Since then, every year on July 4th in Britain has been known as Alice Day or Alice in Wonderland Day. Every year, more people around the world take part in Alice-themed events.
